"It's been a long time," the red wolf breathed. "Indeed." Jarbach looked out over his land, sitting lazily on his rock in the center of the pack dens. It was raining, a light rain that Jarbach could hardly feel soaking into his fur. His grandfather, smaller in height, rose to his paws and began to make he was down the side of the rock. He turned back to grin. "It's going to take you a few weeks to clean this up, you know." "I know." "And I will not help you, you realize." "I wouldn't ask." "Good. Very Good." Thrix leaped to the ground and disappeared into the fog, leaving Jarbach alone to look out over the land, littered with skeletons.
Current.
It's been almost a year since the wolves went into hiding from the vicious, flesh-eating rat creatures that had somehow arrived on the island. Many of the wolves didn't survive; they either took hiding in a permanent place without a way out for foot or water, or they weren't clever enough to find a hiding place with two exits. The other wolves were more thoughtful, creating a food pile, finding a place near fresh water, or finding a hiding spot that was easily defended. Most wolves hid in groups. Some were singular, squeezed into a small cave or tunnel. The rat creatures were everywhere within the first few months the wolves were alerted of their arrival. Their skin was sensitive to the sun, and the wolves soon learned this. Rocky places, like Tombstone's dens, were covered with the creatures, and the land was dangerous at night for almost a year. Right when the rat activity heightened, their food supply shut off. They began to retract diseases from sick animals they had left earlier, the animals that were now their only source of protein. They began to slowly die out, slowly but surely, and after awhile the land was cleared of the creatures, and only their bodies remained. Prey animals, deer and rabbits and mice and the like, began to wander the island again. No one really knows where they had been hiding. Wolves began to emerge, slowly, one by one. They helped clear the bodies, burying them or lighting piles of the rats on fire.
Everything now is almost back to normal, despite the ongoing rumor that two or three of the rats are still alive, hidden underground. But most of the wolves shrug away the rumors. "If there are rats down there, they will die," they say. But some wolves aren't so sure.
